Description

17th Century Italian Landscape Oil Painting 'Gaspard Poussin' aka Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675) Circle and School of Nicolas POUSSIN (1594-1665) Landscape with Classical Ruins, Mountains, and Figures Oil on canvas. Stretcher: 43.5. x 50.75 cm (just over 17 x 20 inch) Measurements 63 x 71 cm framed (25 x 28 inch framed) This is a fine large 17th Century Italian old master classical landscape with figures. It is a view of an extensive and dramatic mountainous landscape with buildings in the distance and a fortress on a mountain peak, and classical figures in the foreground. Distinctly similar to the works of great French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and his brother in law and close collaborator Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675) also called 'Gaspard Poussin' Presented in an antique gilt frame of carved wood, good condition, no visible holes, flaking, or patches, but could use a light clean, dull varnish layer, but still looks wonderful when well lit. Has a damaged old label on the back glued to the stretcher, that says, "Gaspard Poussin" (the remainder is unreadable I think the second line says 'France...' ) Provenance: Private Cambridgeshire estate, dealer purchased early 2017.
