This work depicts the amorous encounter between Bacchus and Ariadne on the desert island of Naxos according to Ovid's metamorphoses. Bacchus returning from Egypt accompanied by laughing satyrs, putti, angels and beasts lands on the island of Naxos and meets Ariadne abandoned by Theseus. Dazzled by Ariadne's beauty, Bacchus seduces her and asks her to marry him.
