Description
This is a breathtaking and Fine Epic Antique 19th c. Italian Old Master Seascape Oil Painting on canvas, by the talented late 19th - early 20th century Italian Orientalist painter, Frank Catano (1880 - 1920.) Catano tragically passed away at only 40 years old, and therefore biographical information on this talented turn-of-the-century European painter is very scarce. Perhaps you know more about him or his work? Please message me if you do . He is best known for his North African Orientalist paintings; however, this particular Italian seascape artwork is without a doubt his Magnum Opus . It is also the largest known artwork by Frank Catano, and arguably his very best painting. This piece depicts an idyllic and dreamlike Italian seascape scene, with several oyster harvesters toiling under a famed Faraglioni di Sant'Andrea seaside archway of Puglia, Italy in the distance. In the foreground, a brunette woman with a red scarf looks toward the viewer's direction, along with two figures pushing a small rowboat aground on the shore. In the far distance, several sailboats can be seen. Signed: "F. Catano" in the lower left corner. This appears to be a very early artwork by the artist, and likely dates to the 1890's - 1900's. This monumental painting is approximately 28 x 76 inches (Over 6 feet wide!) Very good condition for over a century of age and storage, with mild craquelure in a few areas, and mild scuffing and edge wear to the canvas (please see photos.) Acquired from an affluent private collection in Los Angeles County, California. Due to the large size of this piece, S&H costs will be unavoidably high, however, Free Local Pickup is also an option. Priced to Sell. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
