Description

Giovanni Andrea Donducci (Italian, 1575-1655) attributed to. Title: "The Sack of Rome". Medium: Oil on canvas (old glue lining) Size: 28 x 28 inches, (35 x 35 inches framed). Condition: Some old repairs, but good overall sound condition This wonderful painting, a circle of Donducci probably depicts the Sack of Rome. The dark mysterious atmosphere as well as the mannerist treatment of the figures are typical of this artist's work. It appears that the invaders are pillaging a wealthy home. The Tiber River with broken classical column is likely seen in the upper left portion of the painting. The canvas which has an early glue lining looks to be of the period. This painting was at one time owned by the legendary San Francisco decorator, Francis Elkins. Donducci's work may be found in museum collections worldwide.
